Death until the dust, and we're waiting Ruined in the rust, of our craving It feels like, it feels like Don't you know the cost, of your betrayal? You're the one that's lost, you're gonna fail It feels like, it feels like you're gasping with all your might
You can't take away my strength Fix these broken veins There's nothing left to fight You can't take away my pride, I won't be denied There's nothing left to fight “Those silver bullets are expensive so stop wasting them like candy…hey! Are you listening to me?”Thane sighed heavily and lifted his eyes to face the man. Deckard, he was a though and imposing old man. He had no idea where he got the money for the weapons he supplied him, probably was involved with the black market or something, but the vampire didn’t care as long as the weapons did the trick. “Yeah, yeah…I’m listening.” And sometimes the man was just a downright pain in the ass. Lowering his eyes, Thane continued to fill the clips with the bullets. “Any leads on him yet?” Deckard didn’t need to ask to know who he was talking about. It was an obsession, plain and simple, to take down the bastard and make him pay. “Constantin…”Thane’s eyes shot at Deckard, the anger barely contained inside of him, and it only grew stronger over the centuries. “Calm down kid, I’m still looking. No luck so far.” He called him kid, even if he was a few hundred years older than him. His fault for never aging and looking so damned young. Exactly the same when he saved his ass all those years ago. “Sometimes it helps to let it out of your chest.”“I don’t want to talk.” “Then what you want to do?”“I want to find him. And when I do, I will show him exactly how I feel.” Deckard sighed. Only once Thane talked about it. The story of the bastard that corrupted his sister, turned her into a monster and unleashed her against their parents. “I may have something else for you though.”… Flames. It was in the news, innocents burned alive, trapped into buildings without any way out. No sign of the case of the fire was ever found. Deckard had crossed references between the sites and the report from a drunkard that mentioned he had seen a winged fiery monster crossing the skies. Off course the police didn’t believe him. There was any truth to that? Hard to say, but Thane was going to follow the trail of smoke.

It had been almost a week since her last testing. A long, pain filled week since coming to D.C. with her senior director. Her mind was still a mass of confusion but she managed to find short periods of peace by sparring in the private gym in his companies building.
To her surprise, she had found her strength much greater than she could ever have imagined and the magic racing through her veins almost to unreal to comprehend. Whenever the need to experiment was at its worst, she would temper the need by throwing punchs and landing kicks against hapless numbers of boxing bags. She would work herself until she was bone weary and unable to think of anything but rest.
Always when she awoke, there would be substance for her by her bedside and she would choke it down greedily before feeling sick all over again. No doubt some sort of concoction to boast her energy levels.
IT was a never ending cycle that she couldn't seem to pull herself out of even as the surprise and resentment warred in her mind.
Her director had seemed to sense her need to come to terms with things in her own time and she appreciated that. Having given her free rein of the building and guest suites, he had disappeared and left her to her own devices. The help was gracious and anything she needed was presented forthwith.
Immersed in her own torment, she hadn't first been aware of what was going on about her but as time had passed, she began to see the looks cast her way and the fear on some of the human's faces. It was evident that at least some of them knew what she was but they were a loyal lot who kept their thoughts to themselves.After all, a witch was a powerfully bad enemy to have. Especially one who could command the powers of the earth.
Landing another blow against the bag she now faced, she heard the sound of a door opening behind her and turned to see a pretty blonde glazing at her.
Arching a brow, Nix let down her fists and then smiled warily.
"Yes?"
"The Director wishes you to come to his office."
Blinking, Nix watched her for a moment and then nodded.
"Alright. I shall come as soon as I clean up. I'm all sweaty and I doubt he'd like my smell currently."
Nodding, the woman left the room and Nix slipped into the locker room to take a hasty shower. As the water poured over her body, she wondered why he had suddenly summoned her and in such an autocratic manner.
Honestly, didn't he know that honey attracted more bees than sour orders? Grimacing, she realize he probably did but didn't care. It wasn't as if he'd done it any other way in the past... Even when she was growing up. If she didn't show up in the next 5 minutes, he would probably eat the messenger.
Oh yes, her father was such a joy to work for. Even when you were his adopted daughter.
At that thought, Nix felt a laugh bubble up for the first time in days. LIfe was funny sometimes. You never knew what the next moment might bring.
Making short work of her bath, she quickly toweled off and then slipped into a pair of black leather pants and a camisole. Her feet were encased in dainty boots and her hair left to fall loose about her shoulders. Striding from the gym rooms, she made her way through the maze of hallways to the elevator and soon found herself outside her fathers office.
Raising her hand, she knocked swiftly and then stepped inside.
"You wanted to see me, Father?" she asked in an irreverent tone, eyeing him with glittering green eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Half an hour later, Phoenix was staring down at a file in her hand and taking the family jet back to New Orleans. For the first time ever, she had a case to handle on her own and the ramifications of what would happen to the world if she failed made her nauseous.
Surely this all couldn't be right? She knew that there where scary things that went bump in the night but this? Demons, monsters and other evil creatures were appearing the likes of nothing ever seen before? And she was suppose to help stop them?
Talk about a tall order to fill!
Then again.. This was just what she'd been training for, right? The chance to stop evil? Wasn't this what her father had intended to use her for all along? Shouldn't some good come from the research he'd done and practiced on her?
She guessed only time would tell.
As those thoughts faded, the mental image of a darkly handsome vampire took their place. A small smile slipped over her lips and she passed the rest of the flight wondering if she would see him again.
Oh, how she really hoped she would.
The fire breathes The fire feeds Search and search, consuming everything it sees
It lives inside of me Burning, burning, burning It lives inside of me The fire breathes
The fire breathes The fire breathes The beauty in its violence brings me peace
His boots made a loud thud as they hit the asphalt when he slid off the bike. For all intents and purposes, the sleek black and silver vehicle looked like any 95 Apache V-Twin, but that was far from the truth. It had been tuned up and adapted to modern day, its engine replaced for something faster and stronger than the regular engines built in the most modern racing bikes. Thane had no idea where the old man got that kind of hardware, but he was putting it to good use. Leads were weak, only words from some of the local homeless wanderers, especially a man that was evidently drunk of his ass had led him there. They spoke of a winged monster of fire cutting through the night sky, the devil itself they said. Deckard had better not send him into some wild goose chase. Thane rubbed his temples in a small circular way as he closed his eyes. The old man kept saying he needed to loosen up, discover if there was still something human inside him or if he was just a killing machine. And for most of the time, he did actually felt like that, a hollow machine moved only by anger and instinct alone. Daniel Thane had really died centuries ago, his anger and memories the only thing that were kept alive inside. Was that all that he was now? It was when the faint smell of smoke assaulted him and his eyes snapped open. Before he realized it, he was already running towards it. And it was a four story building turned into a raging fiery inferno. Not far from him, a couple sobbed and held on to each other. Once their pained eyes saw him, they rushed towards Thane pleading for his help, but deep down they knew it was nothing to be done. As he looked up into the burning inferno in front of him, his eyes caught the young girl screaming for her parents from the window of the building. She would be dead soon, the fire was too great for him to reach her in time. It would consume him if he tried and even the curse in his blood wouldn’t protect him from it. So it was easier to accept the death of the young girl as an unavoidable event, beyond his grasp. Why he should care anyways? He was a bastard, a void killing machine, nothing more. Silently cursing himself, he closed his eyes and raced into the fire. The smoke immediately filled his lungs and almost made him gag. Even if the fire hadn’t touched him still, his skin started to feel the effects of the heat. It started to crack and sizzle and pain shot through him as the flames licked his skin as he pushed forward. Racing up the stairs, he found the young girl screaming and crying next to the window. The child was still holding on to her life and looked at him with wide-open eyes. And right next to her there was the source of the fire, with charred skin and red fiery skin, the demon eyed him as flames swirled his body, emanating from him as if his body itself. Its wings spread had a span of over two meters as his mouth curled into a devilish smile. Reaching for his gun, Thane aimed and pulled the trigger, but the bullets melted before they even reached the demon. A rough laugh escaped its throat as the fire continued to spread around them with doubled intensity now. As the vampire considered his next move, the children’s scream caught his attention. He would ignore her, take on the demon and find a way to stop it. Sacrifice one life to save a hundred, it was a tactical decision. Another panicked scream echoed into the raging inferno. Cursing, Thane moved to the child and took her on his arms, slowly backing up away from the demon towards the stairs only to see them collapse before his eyes. He searched for another way down but there was none…except one. “Hold on tight,” was all that he said in a rough whisper like tone and immediately the girl’s little skinny arms held on to his torso with fierce determination. With one hand he moved his coat over her to shield the young girl and then raced towards the window, the vampire took a leap of faith. The glass cut his face as he broke through it, his body turning and his back hitting the ground hard, with a heavy thud. An eternity had passed in those few seconds until he moved his coat away and saw the girl with a wide-eyed look of panic in her eyes, but unharmed. Her parents raced to her and took their child in their arms. A deafening sound was made heard and they turned back just in time to see a winged beast take the skies before the whole structure of the building collapsed. On his knees, while smoke still emanated from his body and his skin still sizzled with the severe burns from the fire, the vampire watched the sky before pushing himself up and with a move of his hand wiped any memory of him from the minds of the little girl and her parents before turning away to slip into the shadows.
You thought I was down You thought I was gone Thought I wasn't around That I left you alone But look up in the sky Just look up in the sky See that I'm everywhere, everywhere Shining down on you
Well, Well. What did we have here? From blocks away, Nix had felt a pull of urgency that hadn't allowed her rest from the flight but had instead drug her to this place and time. The feeling had been so strong in fact that she'd almost called in back up but decided at the last moment to find out exactly what it was that was causing her distress. Now, she was glad she had although she had no doubt that she'd be reporting this little mess. Immediately upon arrival on the scene, the witch had sensed that it wasn't a fire started by natural causes and had just been preparing herself to crash the party when the vampire named Thane had strolled from the flames with a child in hand. From the rising heat, she caught a glimpse of something pulling itself from the flickering fire and soaring into the sky but the smoke made it hard to tell exactly what it was. The power residue it left behind though left no doubt that it was supernatural in origin. Well, Happy Happy Joy Joy. It looked like New Orleans had a new player. Didn't THAT just make her all happy and tingly inside? Snorting at that thought, Nix waited and watched for a few more moments as the one she knew as Thane released the child and seemed to hesitate before the parents before making a motion that no doubt would wipe away any memory of himself or what they'd seen this night. Good. At least he wasn't careless. He was as smart as he was good looking. Always a nice surprise. When he wheeled and ducked into the shadows, the dark haired witch moved quietly back to her own bike and slipped aboard. Her helmet soon followed and then the engine purred softly to life before slipping into position behind the one the vampire rode. She had no doubt that he would try to follow whatever it was that had flown the coop back there but the creature was long gone and virtually untraceable at the moment. So that left only the two of them and Nix needed info. Info that she was sure Thane wouldn't want to share but would just have to give over anyways. If there was a new supernatural threat in the city, Phoenix needed to know about it and she needed to know about it like yesterday. That didn't mean, however, she couldn't have a bit of fun with it in the meantime though, she thought with a chuckle as they reached the open road. As her bike cleared another vehicle between them, a mischievous grin tugged at her lips. Leaning down over the seat, she hit the gas enough that she managed to sidle up next to the other bike and then she glanced over at him. She was sure he wouldn't know who it was but hopefully he would understand the challenge. Reeving the motor a bit more, she suddenly shot around him and took off through traffic like it was sitting still. "Come on, baby! Show me what you've got!" she thought to herself with a laugh as she raced along. [/center]
Another dream that will never come true Just to compliment your sorrow Another life that I've taken from you A gift to add on to your pain and suffering Another truth you can never believe Has crippled you completely All the cries you're beginning to hear Trapped in your mind, and the sound is deafening
Thane could still feel the sickening smell of his flesh burnt by the fire. What the hell was he doing, playing the hero? He wasn’t a hero, he was a murderous bastard, a monster on his own right. He wasn’t supposed to care and save the innocents. When he did, he allowed the creature to escape. Allowed it to go free and risk it doing its thing again. It was really worthy? Saving one life and endangering others?
God help him, he couldn’t just let the child to die.
Forget about it, there was no good dwelling on the ways and ifs. It would be utterly foolish to think of himself as something akin to a hero. Stupid arrogance and dreams of greatness didn’t appeal to him at all.
He leaped onto his bike, letting the engine roar as he sped up. The vampire could already feel the healing cursing through his blood as the cold wind hit him. It was a blessing mixed with the curse. It made him a better killer.
At first he was trying to track down the direction the creature had soared into, but the damned cars that forced him to dive left and right to avoid them made tracing the demon impossible and then he was back to square one.
Great! More hours of wandering around and looking for smoke signals. Not to mention that his stomach had just decided that then was a good moment to start growling. Just freaking great!
While he considered taking a left turn in the next exit and go after one of the hookers down that street so he could feed, a bike came in parallel to him, the rider was wrapped in black leather and a dark helmet covered the head. With all the mixed smells that were coming from the fast wind hitting him, it was impossible for him to recognize the rider.
When it took up speed and left him behind, Thane understood the challenge. His paranoid mind came into play, perhaps it was a trap, trying to lure him in.
Well, it would be rude not to follow and see just what it was about.
Picking up the speed, Thane slid through traffic, barely missing the cars on his path as he gained speed and closed in the biker.
It's the thrill of the chase that keeps me comin' back in here time after time Somehow my heart starts to race and it keeps runnin' all around without my mind Must be the mystery I love 'cause I'm never sure exactly what I'll find But it's the thrill of the chase that keeps me comin' back in here time after time
There was nothing like the feel of a good chase.
Phoenix grinned behind her helmet as to pressed on through traffic and then cast a glance behind her to see if her adversary was still following. To her delight, he was not only following but he was making a valiant attempt to catch up with her. A soft chuckle escaped as she turned her attention back to the road and decided to kick it up a notch.
Hitting the gas hard, she cut in front of a south bound truck and disappeared from Thane's sight. In that split second, she ducked over on the rail and then hit the brakes enough that the truck went right on by.
Playing leap frog with the thing, she waited for a few moments before appearing behind it and glancing at the far lane to see what the vampire was doing. Part of her felt the need to test the male for some odd reason and she admitted silently to herself that she was gauging his worth as a prospective lover. Sure, there was no doubt that he was fine as hell but that didn't necessarily mean all her other qualifications would be as easily filled. It was easier to figure out if he was worth it BEFORE she ended up disappointed.
After all, a girl had to have standards right?
Their first encounter had left her with a peaked interest but she wasn't one to take a man to her bed just because he might be delicious eye candy. Since she got more of a thrill from a man who knew his way around more than a bedroom, the men who did, occasionally, occupy that spot were intelligent, well educated and dangerous to boot.
Because of her nature, she was easily bored unless challenged and she'd found that she needed the same thrill she got at work in every aspect of her life. This meant that lovers were far in between and she'd almost decided to buy stocks in batteries because her little blue friend got more work outs than the real thing.
Yeah, her life was a sorry state.
Which led her right back to this moment and playing hide and go seek with the male on the other motorcycle. Some where along the way, she'd decided that if could keep up then she might be willing to see if that spark from the last time was still there.
I'm at war with the word 'cause I Ain't never gonna sell my soul I've already made up my mind No matter what I can't be bought or sold When my faith is getting weak And I feel like giving in You breathe into me again
It was obvious that the rider was skilled, what wasn’t so obvious was its intent. But like hell Thane was going to just head back home and give this a chance to come back and bite him in the ass, he hated unfinished business. When the biker seemed to disappear, the vampire hissed in frustration. No, not like this. However the joker was, it wasn’t going to get away that easily.
Slowing down a bit, he sniffed the air while racing down on a road over 80 mph in a lane filled with the taint of vehicle exhausts and the caustic wind blazing at his face wasn’t helping much. Not even his ears would be reliable to track down the biker. Dammit, he had no patience to play hide and seek, he had always preferred the straight on, sword swinging, blood flowing approach. Even the thought of blood was enough to make his stomach growl and he was going to torn that rider’s throat to get what he needed.
With only his instincts to guide him, Thane kept on moving, dodging the cars along the way with uncanny accuracy. As much as he hated what he had become, he had to admit it had its perks and enhanced reflexes were one of them.
There!
Narrowing his eyes, he spotted the rider on the far lane, it was a quick flash of the bike’s back tire, but enough for him to pinpoint the location. Now the question what was the quickest way to get there, and he decided to improvise. Picking up the speed, he threw his weight back causing the front tire to rise from the floor and sped onto the car ahead, using it as a sort of ramp, he climbed over it and landed on the far lane besides the rider.
His hand moved towards the back pocket of his leather jacket, latching the throwing star there he was about ready to throw it at the biker’s front tire and force him to a halt when his nose caught a whiff of the scent that came with the wind. It wasn’t a him, it was…her! The vampire felt his blood burn in his veins as he remembered their last encounter, the taste of her blood and her lips and the way he had wanted to devour her whole back then when she taunted him like that.
Thane gave her an annoyed snarl for the affect she had on him. “Pull over, NOW!”
She knew she was playing with fire. There was no doubt in her mind that Thane would try to take control of the situation but that didn't mean she was prepared to let him. It's always been her thought that men like him were to used to ladies doing as they were told and she wasn't about to give him the satisfaction.
So, when he made his move and pulled up close to her bike, she simply grinned, hit the brakes and barely made the exit ramp that took her down on to a less occupied street. There was no way Thane could managed that turn so he'd be forced to wait for the next off ramp and double back.
Giving her time to reach her apartment just down the road and park her bike to wait.
Grinning evilly, she slowed just enough to give him time to catch up without her having to wait all night in the parking lot. Letting the purr of the motor fall silent, she swung a slender leg over the machine and leaned on it even as she pulled the black helmet off and shook out her long dark hair.
Before long, she heard the growl of another engine and she settled against her bike as she watched Thane approach. Her gaze was mischievous and impish as she smirked and laid her helmet on the seat.
"Bout time you showed up, vampire.... Took you long enough to figure out who I was don't you think??" she teased. "And here our last encounter had left me with such high.... Hopes...."
As she spoke, she let her gaze trail down his form and had to bank the fire she was sure was sparking in her eyes. It wouldn't do to let him think he had the upper hand. He was entirely to arrogant for that!
(ACKKKKKKK DON"T KILL HER PLEASE!! LOL)
Shrouded in proof, You're the mystery You're the truth that lives within the world we see You're the hand that holds destiny And I can't pretend i don't know And I can't leave it alone
A deep, guttural angry growl left his throat as he saw she take the next ramp and leave. Yes, it was the infuriating witch alright. She either had no idea who she was messing with or didn’t mind pushing his buttons and that…well that…made his skin grow hotter and him want to drain her, not just for the blood, which was not good. He had a job to do, and that didn’t involve chasing after a female, no matter how much…shit, he was already taking the next ramp to follow after her, wasn’t he?
Thane cursed as he still remembered the little taste of her blood and her lips he felt on that night when they met. Cursed himself that he still remembered the curves of her body as the rain enveloped them and cursed as he still felt the same desire he had felt that night.
Perhaps he should just kill her and be done with it, it would be safer for him. So she was no longer an issue, he could be back to be that numb killing machine that he was, nothing more nothing less. Attachments were a messy thing, one that gave someone else a matter of control over one another and he hated the idea of it, the idea of…hell, his body wanted hers, needed hers, there was no denying.
Had he no freaking self control?
Once his keen eyes spotted her into the parking lot, he approached her and then let his own engine fall silent. Leaping of the motorcycle, he walked in closer, his brow furrowed and his blue eyes glowing with a fiery glow, Thane bared his fangs in an infuriated snarl at her words and stepped in closer, ready to strike her down.
God, her scent messed with his mind as well as his body.
He struggled against the urge to claim her, to strike her, to drink from her, to kiss her…and more. It seemed the more she infuriated him, the more he wanted her and so close, it was hard to resist the growing impulse of his body to take her right them, to rip off her clothes and have his wicked way with her. His body was growing so hot that no doubt she would realize and it he once again cursed, not wanting her to realize the obvious and give her the satisfaction of knowing what she was doing to him.
“Do you have a death wish, witch?” he growled, “I should just slit your throat and drain you of your blood!”
But that was just part of what he wanted to do with her, wasn’t it? He pictured her in a bed, unclothed and underneath him and he bared his fangs again in a scowl. Keep control, keep control, keep control, he muttered over and over in his mind like a mantra.
“That’s the second time you step in my way. What is it that you want?”
From the glint in her eyes, he knew very well what she wanted. But he just didn’t want to be the first one to give in, and had to bite his lower lip to prevent himself from going after her blood.
Coming out your mouth with your blah, blah, blah Zip your lips like a padlock And meet me in the back With the jack and the jukebox I don't really care where you live at Just turn around, boy, let me hit that Don't be a little bitch with your chit chat Just show me where your dick's at
OH.. Wasn't he all cute when he was so ferocious?
It made her wanna ask him if he was going to spank her but the look on his face at them moment simply made her grin. He obviously was a man used to people trembling in fear when he looked at them but he might as well get used to the fact that she wasn't that sort of girl. She'd been around the block with his type to many times to play the nancy girl and bow down to his supposed superiority.
Nah... that just wasnt her thing.
Besides, she had other things she'd much rather be doing. Like stripping that leather right off his body and having wild monkey sex like he'd never imagined before. She could practically taste his skin on her lips and his...
Damn, back to business Jameson. No day dreaming aloud when the man looked as if he might wanna kill her more than get vertical in a a way that promised to be more satisfying for both of them.
Mores the pity. Here she'd thought he had more game than that. Surely he wasn't threatened by one little ol witch? That thought caused her grin to brighten even more as she shook out her long dark hair and pushed away from the bike.
"What I want??? Come on now, vampire.. Don't disappointment me... Here I thought you were the intelligent sort. I even saved you some footwork so you didn't have to come looking for me!You going to repay me by being all snarly or are you going to come upstairs and blow off some of that steam you've got boiling beneath the surface in a much more....... enjoyable way?"
Smirking a bit at him, she slipped a hand up around his neck and stood on tiptoe to place her lips hard against his. As she did so, she let some of her magic spark from where their skin joined and then trialed a hand down his chest before pulling away.
"Unless, of course, I misread all those signs you were giving off and you prefer ... quieter game??"
This is the last night you'll spend alone Look me in the eyes so I know you know I'm everywhere you want me to be The last night you'll spend alone I'll wrap you in my arms and I won't let go I'm everything you need me to be I won't let you say goodbye And I'll be your reason why
She was…grinning?
Thane had made the worst scum of monsters tremble before him and this impertinent witch was grinning? Women of modern times, they were so infuriating. Nothing like the old times when they would bow and show the utmost respect…or fear to someone like him. But heck, the world had changed quite a bit in the last couple of centuries, hadn’t it? Even so, he had never met such an infuriating woman like this one. And the worst part of it? It made his blood boil and made him want her even more.
And then there came her impertinent tongue lashing out dry sarcasm at him. The vampire couldn’t stop himself of picturing in his mind other things he’d rather her tongue be doing. Hell, it was so infuriatingly hard to focus on something other than the dirt thoughts running around his mind.
Thane parted his lips to speak, but what happened instead was the crashing of the witch’s lips hard against his. Her taste threatening to chase off all coherent thoughts away from his mind. She really had no idea what kind of fire she was messing with, did she?
The soft skin of his lips tingled as the magic sparkled on them, but it didn’t do anything to soothe the intense look of his eyes, but instead made it look dangerous in nature.
When she pulled her hand away from his chest and started to speak again, his own hand moved on the blink of an eye, grabbing her wrist with an iron clad grip and stopping her from moving away.
“You always babble like this witch?” he asked her in a furious tone. Freaking hell, he wanted her, wanted to mark her as his even if he had no right to make such a claim, but yeah, at this point all good sense had left his mind and base instinct was now driving him.
Thane pulled her to him and with a quick jerk, tossed her on his shoulder and dragged her towards the house. It didn’t even occur to the vampire that he didn’t have the key for the front door or that she would be able to unlock it. No, he placed his hand in the handle and pressed the door open with his vampire might, broke the lock not minding any protest she might utter.
Once she had her inside, he kicked the door back and placed her down, pressing her against the door now behind her as his lips came crashing down upon hers and his demanding hands came forward ripping apart her coat into shreds.
He wanted her, all of her.
