Once the initial growling at the fae who dared to hold a sword at Corbin’s neck had ceased and a small smile appeared on his lips when Marissa had waved at him, Drake stayed there watching the events dumbfolded. Lost between his lust for Marissa and his devotion for Corbin, he simply stood between them with that lost puppy look in his eyes.
Did Marissa even know how she moved him? That his blood heated when he sniffed her flowery perform in the air and listened to her defiant words? At first he had found her to be soft and weak, but then he started to see a new kind of strength that lurked behind her eyes. What he wouldn’t given to be in Corbin’s skin when she was with him.
And did Corbin know that? Probably not or the dark lord would have already tear him limb from limb.
But his allegiance to Corbin was of a different sort. The dark Fae had told him that it was alright to be what he was, that he should have pride in it instead of hiding. So long he believed the nun in the orphanage that had called him a demon for what he did. For so long he wanted to bury everything in the past and forget…and he did for a time, lived as one with the beasts of the wild. But then, to meet someone who remembered him to be a man, that told it was alright being what he was, that gave him a place and a purpose by his side?
How could he betray him?
And then there were those maddening times when he fled from everyone else in the compound. When his mind couldn’t forget that flowery scent that assaulted his senses, and when he closed his eyes, he’d see her face, see her body so close to his that he could almost reach out and touch her – and how he desired so – but every time he reached for her and opened his eyes, there was nothing there. He’d have to shift into his wolf form and run away to the wilds or he knew he would give into it and search for her.
And there was also Danger, the only other female that had affected him. She was so entirely different from Marissa’s golden hair and soft features. Danger had black hair, tanned skin and was a wild one. But both held a fire that fascinated him.
He had tried to approach Danger, but she had pushed him away. Every time he tried, she snarled at him, threatening him with claws and sharp teeth.
Female’s, they were maddening.
When Corbin followed the Seelie queen, Drake didn’t follow, afraid of his own reactions. He hadn’t came to this place on a horse, he had came as the wolf and had shifted back just as they had reached the white castle.
And right now he was severely considering letting go of the wolf form and slip out into the wilds and howl and grow, and hopefully find a beast three times his size that could hurt him so at least his mind would change its focus.

Dalen wasn’t one used to subterfuges and false words. He was direct and fierce, with a blunt honesty. If anyone had a problem with it, they could draw their swords and move against him. But hardly anyone ever dared to, the warrior was a legendary swordsman in the realm and had never tasted defeat before.
When Baden smiled however, he could see the dark fae’s intent as clear as the day, no words were necessary. And such façade disgusted, he would die before swearing allegiance to one who conquered the realm by force, would fight to his last breath.
But soon enough, his mind was distracted back to the new king and queen. They had a past? The Seelie queen had admired her brother undress, even if unknowing who the other fae was? Those things caused him to doubt the queen’s ability to rule. Would someone with this background be able to stand in times of duress?
But as if answering to his unspoken question, the golden haired fae stood up to the dark king with a fiery intensity that put his menacing stance to shame. A fleeting smile of admiration crossed his lips…perhaps he initial assumptions about her were wrong after all.
Still resting his hand over the handle of his sheathed sword, the warrior followed the queen from a small distance as she moved to the buffet table that held a selection of fae and human food alike. It was a strange combination for him who was used to grow and hunt his own food, but it appealed to him none the less.
But he wouldn’t move for the food just yet, for now he watched the queen with keen eyes, watching events unfold and waiting for the right moment to introduce himself.
When Corbin grabbed the queen’s arm forcefully, he was about to sever the audacious hand away from his body, when once again the Seelie queen impressed him greatly. She had fire in her eyes and strength. Two qualities of a good queen, but still not enough. A rightful ruler had also to be noble and wise.
It was then that the loud and obviously drunk fae Rhogan smiled widely at him, one of the high captains of the light realm, he placed his hand on Dalen’s shoulder.
“Lord Ahriman! Is that really you, isn’t it? I can hardly believe my eyes! It has been too long since you last honored us with your presence.”
Lord. Such word made him shift uncomfortably. He never cared for titles and the look of admiration silly things like this brought unto the eyes of others. But the friendly smile of the other elf that had fought side by side with him so long ago warmed his heart and he smiled in return.
“It is me, my friend. News of the coronation reached me.”
“Are you here to support the new queen like you done with the previous ruler?” Rhogan asked.
“Right now my friend,” he smiled again, moving his hand away from his sword and placing his arm around his loud friend shoulders. “I think I will support a mug of the same beverage you’re having and a leg of that roasted lamb.”
The queen seemed to be able to take care of herself.

First, this ‘Darth Vadar’ reference, and now dude? DUDE? Good Gods, how did he EVER get mixed up with such an infuriating woman? Had he not killed enough people in his lifetime to earn instinctive respect? Had he NOT shown her what kind of a monster he was, every time one of his soldiers showed any semblance of disrespect toward her? And what she was saying! Was she actually claiming ignorance? How could she not have known what his plants had been? SHE HAD BEEN STAYING IN HIS GODSDAMN COMPOUND!
Completely ignoring the shocked faces and sword-bearing arms surrounding them, Corbin let loose an incredulous laugh as her tirade went on. She’d been threatened in his own home? Well, she’d lived, hadn’t she? And, given the holes in his ranks, he’d obviously done an okay job at making sure his men didn’t eat her ass…though, now, he was seriously wishing he hadn’t! GOD, this was why he didn’t get close to people! This was why he should have killed the human when they’d first met, instead of letting himself become so entangled in her web!
See? SEE?! There, right there; those feelings of doubt and confusion were going to get him killed! As she talked about being thrust in the middle of a war, guilt settled in, and he growled in utter frustration. She was his war prize, his woman, his godsdamn Queen! She should have been and should still be, able to handle a war! The dragon Kyle was too damn gentle to have killed her; she should have known that…and Gods, it wasn’t as if she were some flimsy human. She was a witch! A fae! Any mate of his could have held her own against any foe, and given the fact that she seemed to have such a godsdamn hold on his soul, she should be able to do just that!
And yet, there she was, claiming that she’d been in danger and it was all his fault. Granted, that was true…but she didn’t seem to understand that that was who he was! Hadn’t they had this discussion before? Hadn’t he explained to her that there was no way he could change? When she’d been abducted, she must have known that he was as bloodthirsty as he was power hungry! Why was this coming as such a shock?
KING MOODY! GAH!
”You really never know when to close that pretty little mouth of yours, do you?” He said after a moment of attempting to regain his composure. He was surprised at how smooth his voice sounded, but he wasn’t about to let on...especially when he felt that wiggle of pride dance around in his chest. Unknowingly, as Marissa met him word for word, a bit of respect slid across his face, alongside some hefty yearning. Gods, how he missed that fire at his side or in his bed.
But, as quickly as the emotions came, they were hidden away by a nasty little smile. ”I never once came to your Court, thinking to insult you. I merely came to pay a little visit to the new, resident Queen of the Light Court and congratulate her on her…vast achievements. But you know what, my little witch?”
Stalking forward, he couldn’t help but peel his lips back in a snarl, stopping only when he was a scant four inches away from the irritatingly beautiful Queen. ”You might have an idea. Consider my visit an official declaration of war.”
As his men gathered around the exit, making sure that their lord was well looked after, the King of the Dark Court took a few steps back and faced the rest of the gathered fae. “My name is Corbin Muunokhoi, I am the King of the Dark Court after defeating all enemies who dare rise up against my name…and I do so declare that I declare war on your pretty little country.”
Yet another toothy smile was thrown at Rissa as he back up toward his men and his lands beyond the castle doors. He would not acknowledge the regret that simmered in his chest, or think about how much he wanted to fall to his knees and beg for her forgiveness. There would never be love in his heart for another soul again. He could not afford such…disgusting weaknesses.
“We will see each other again, on the battlefield, Marissa Skye. Until then…enjoy your crown. While you still have it.”
